Have You Taken The IFTTT Challenge?

If you choose to accept this challenge, your entire digital life is about to go to a WHOLE… NEW… LEVEL. Your mission: utilize IFTTT.com. What is this, you ask? IF THIS happens, THEN do THAT. It’s the basic if/then loop that programmers worldwide have been using to harness the power of computer languages for years. Now it’s been brilliantly applied to the web, and given such a simple interface that you could use it with half your brain tied behind your back.

It may sound intimidating at first, but it’s so easy to use!

How IFTTT Works

Here’s how this works. You already use Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Gmail, Google Calendar, Dropbox, Evernote, and many other online services. IFTTT (pronounced like “Lift” without the “L”) calls these, “Channels”, and lets you connect any two of them together to create a chain of events, which they call, “Recipes.” They currently support 77 different channels, and you can browse through thousands of recipes which are being publicly shared for you to use or customize.

Ways IFTTT Might Help You

For instance, every time someone tags you in a photo on Facebook, you can have IFTTT send the pic to you in a text message. You could post pics you like on Instagram to a Facebook album, or automatically save them to your Dropbox (which you could then use as a source of pictures for your screensaver).

Or maybe you’re a die-hard fan of Instagram and coffee. IFTTT can email you every image tagged #coffee from this day forward. Pretty amazing, I know.

Would you like to know when it’s about to rain… on the other side of the earth… via text message? IFTTT will do that. Have you ever wished that you could follow a certain blog without having to manually check it for the latest updates? Forget RSS feed readers, have IFTTT monitor the feed for updates and email them to you, or add them to your Readability account — all done automatically.

Looking for a fancy used doo-fangle or antique plastic widget on Craigslist? Why not have IFTTT do all the searching while you sleep, like your own personal assistant? If you like, IFTTT will call you and read the Craigslist message to you.

The IFTTT Challenge

This is the most innovative and exciting web app that I’ve seen in a long time. Your imagination is the only limit! Are you going to accept the challenge to use IFTTT?
